NOC ENGINEER - NEW TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT

Dept: Operations – NOC

Location: Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria

To develop automated ways of getting NOC tasks done to achieve increased efficiency by creating software programs, writing scripts and using other possible means to achieve this.

 

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Reviewing current systems.
  • Customize applications used at the NOC to achieve more functionality with ease and efficiency.
  • Develop user friendly programs (applications) that will compliment network monitoring, error recognition and reporting activities.
  • Develop scripts to execute regular and monotonous NOC activities.
  • Develop automated means of gathering historical data from various monitoring tools
  • Create automated means of generating reports on network utilization for reporting.
  • Creating trend reports
  • Write new program codes using prescribed specifications , test and troubleshoot programs utilizing the appropriate hardware, database, and programming technology.
  • Test and develop programming modifications in controlled and real situations before going live
  • Refine data and format final product.
  • Maintain and modify programs once they are up and running; make approved changes by amending flow charts, develop detailed programming logic, and coding changes.
  • Preparation of training manuals for users
  • Evaluate simple interrelationships between programs such as whether a contemplated change in one part of a program would cause unwanted results in a related part.
  • Confer with users to gain understanding of needed changes or modifications of existing programs.
  • Resolve questions of program intent, data input, output requirements, and inclusion of internal checks and controls
  • Analyze performance of programs and take action to correct deficiencies based on consultation with users and approval of supervisor.
  • Write and maintain programming documentation.
  • Maintain confidentiality with regard to the information being processed, stored or accessed.
  • Document programming problems and resolutions for future reference.
  • Presenting ideas for system improvements
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Essential Skills \ Knowledge

The programmer must have experience with:

  • Programming applications e.g. Visual Basic, Oracle and/or Java Visual C++, Oracle, QBasic, SQL Server databases, SQL
  • Microsoft operating systems such as Windows XP/Server 2003/Server 2008/Vista/Windows 7
  • Crystal Reports
  •  Networking/LANs, TCP/IP protocol
  • Website development as well as the use of program “classes” and creation of DLL’s will be an added advantage
  • Ability to write scripts using tools such as Perl.
  • Microsoft Office applications.
  • Quickly understanding and using new software to achieve goals.

 

Desirable Skills/Knowledge

The programmer must have experience with:

  • Network monitoring activities and applications.
  • Network preventive / corrective maintenance.
  • Bandwidth/Network monitoring tools.
  • Analytical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
  • Enjoy working with others in a team atmosphere.
  • Able to work fast paced within the environment.
  • Enjoy maintaining/enhancing code to meet changing customer/industry needs
  • Have a “customer-service” orientation

 

Education and/or Professional Qualifications

Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related field.

SENIOR PROJECT ENGINEER

Dept: Project Engineering

Location: Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria

Reporting to the Head of Project Engineering this role will be responsible for the capture, conceptualisation, development, resourcing and implementation of projects.  In addition, the Senior Project Engineer must research availability of hardware suitable for project purpose and also contribute to ongoing quality initiatives in the department.

 

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Partner with Business Development in providing a total, seamless one stop shop non-standard solution to the customer.
  • Assist Business Development where possible in providing technical leverage to enable NAL to sell bandwidth.
  • Carry out all parts of the pre-sales functions of projects (with the exception of site surveys, engineering h/w or s/w tests, pricing bandwidth, and packaging final proposals). Delegate drawings to Support Officer where possible.
  • Technical lead in all communications with customers on projects managed, including capture meetings, follow-ups, telephone conversations and e-mails.
  • Leverage the resources of Engineering and Field Operations at various stages of the project as required by the needs of the project.
  • Engage external contractors through an effective contractor selection methodology and follow up on the work of contractors at key check-points in the project and in an ad-hoc manner from time to time.
  • Ensure that all individual projects comply with NAL’s quality responsibilities in respect of TL9000.
  • Ensure that all individual projects comply with the requirements of NAL’s Health and Safety Office.
  • Participate in the execution of tasks and the assumption of additional duties as required by NAL’s Quality Regime and agreed with PEN Head of Department.
  • Execute Head of Department duties, specifically in the areas of reporting and meeting attendance in the absence of both the Head and Deputy Head of Department.

 

Qualifications & Hiring Criteria

  • A Bachelors degree (or equivalent) in Information Technology or Engineering supported by professional qualifications related to internet protocol or data transfer systems (e.g. CCNP)
  • Previous experience managing or providing management support to a technical or engineering department in a multi-department organisation
  • Demonstrated experience in technical or engineering solutions design 
  • A minimum of two year's experience working with bandwidth solutions architecture, knowledge of VSAT solutions, microwave radio solutions and fibre links.
  • Highly developed relationship management skills with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
